Originally built as a prison- Wingdale prison. In 1924 to 1994 the complex became the Harlem Valley Mental Asylum. In the 1930s the facility was on the cutting edge of psychiatric treatments, experimenting with a new approach- Shock Therapy. Lexihaunted feels tingly thinking about it. The Asylum outdid itself! Dr. Walter Freeman came on board in 1942. Things got horribly terrible. Dr. Freeman came up with a most inhumane treatment- the Lobotomy! The excitement mushroomed as the staff had a huge amount of patients to practice on. Thousands of numbered metal morgue tags were needed- the doctors and nurses managed to generate lots of corpses.
At one time the asylum had 80 structures on 800 acres. Around 5,000 disturbed individuals had the privilege of vacationing at Harlem Valley Mental in good ol’ Wingdale, New York. Lexihaunted keeps a well appointed luxury apartment in the main building.
